Lately, there have been reports that WhatsApp would stop working for some older versions of various phones from January 1, 2021. This news is only partially true. Some versions will not support WhatsApp from January 1. But that would be very old versions. Your phone is probably working just fine and WhatsApp won’t be a problem for you. WhatsApp support will not be completely gone.
The main point to be noted here is that WhatsApp has not officially announced the policy change about the support for older Android and iOS phones. The fact that the app is not focused upon older phones but mainly on the operating system is very important.
WABetaInfo is a Twitter account that is quite right about WhatsApp information tweeted that “WhatsApp is not dropping the support from older phones. It is just a piece of fake news.”
To know better about this piece of information, we have to take a closer look into the WhatsApp policy. It says, “We provide support and recommend using the following devices:
- Android running OS 4.0.3 and newer version
- iOS 9 and the newer version for iPhones
- Select phones running KaiOS 2.5.1 and newer (including JioPhone and JioPhone 2)
Some Android phones that might lose access to WhatsApp because of the older version of OS include HTC Desire, Motorola Droid Razr, LG Optimus Black, Samsung Galaxy S2. There are more versions like this that might lose support due to the same reason.
For iPhones, the models which do use older versions than iOS 9 will become outdated for WhatsApp like iPhone 4 and earlier models. All the subsequent devices will have to be updated to continue using the app.
This policy is not new and came into effect at the beginning of 2020. At that time, WhatsApp dropped its support from older Android phones running 2.3.7 version or older, and iPhones running on iOS 8 or older.
As per some reports, a WhatsApp spokesperson has said-
“At WhatsApp, we follow industry practices and stop support for older versions of phones, requiring users to upgrade their devices to newer OS and continue using our services. However, before any such action, we give adequate notice to our users who would be impacted. This would give them time to learn about continuing to use WhatsApp.
All these reports of WhatsApp not continuing for Android phones with OS 4.0.3 version or older, and iPhone OS 9 or older isn’t a new piece of information.
These older versions of phones are already not supported by us.
This information was announced back in December 2019 and is somehow being connected to January 2021.”
