GOI has launched the Aarogya Setu app to target the large feature phones market and increase scale of COVID-19 monitoring.

JioPhones are cheap internet-enabled feature phones sold by Reliance Jio. Right now, the app is launched for only one model of JioPhone which has a user base of approximately 5 million. Due to this reason, it is quite a logical step taken by the government. The government hopes that this step will help in increasing the COVID-19  tracing and monitoring in rural areas where the JioPhone is quite prevalent.

The Aarogya Setu app for Jiophones was launched by IT Minister Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad. He told that the app is being launched for only one model of JioPhone but soon it will be launched for other models as well.

Mr. Abhishek Singh, President and Chief Executive Officer of National e-Governance Division (NeGD) said, “The endeavor of the government is to ensure that everyone is safe and everyone who has a phone on which the app can be installed should be able to get it.”

Mr. Singh also said,” JioPhones run on KaiOS operating system, which is different from Andriod and iOS…So we have developed version of Aarogya Setu for KaiOS, and it has been released today.” He further added,”NeGD has helped develop the KaiOS version of the app. Every model tends to have some peculiarity and for that the application requires a little bit of tweaking which is being done.”

As far as the iOS and Android downloads of Aarogya Setu are concerned, it has already crossed the 100 million mark.

Some people are concerned that the app is essentially a surveillance app and hinders with the privacy of citizens. We at Instatechnews would really request you do not believe such rumors. The government via IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has already clarified in a Twitter video shared by the minister himself. He informed that the user data feeded into the Aarogya Setu app is accessed only by GOI and it is stored in a highly encrypted server. He also informed that the app assigns all users with an anonymous ID. Only this ID is used to interact with the server and no personal information is used anywhere.

ublishing failed. The response is not a valid JSON response.

Hence, in conclusion, we can only request you to have trust in the government and give all your support. We will get many chances to criticize the government or protest against any other thing that we might think is a wrong step. But, now is not the time for these things. The problem is huge and we can win only if we fight together as one.

Since the Aarogya Setu app is now available on feature phones as well, we really don’t have any excuses left. So we request our readers to download the app as soon as possible.
